The Basics on Treating Carpet Stains in Downers GroveHomeowners in the Downers Grove, Bolingbrook, and Woodridge area choose carpet for the warmth and comfort it brings to their homes. But where life happens, spills happen, and carpet is a more challenging flooring option for cleaning these spills. Floor Coverings International Downers Grove is here to help with some tips on how to treat carpet stains.

Basic Stain Treatment

Treating carpet stains doesn’t have to be a mystery. Successfully treating a stain has less to do with finding the perfect cleaning solution and more to do with approach. Avoid driving the stain deeper into the carpet pile. Blot carpet stains instead of rubbing them, and treat stains immediately when possible.

When treating a carpet stain start by scooping up and disposing of any solids. Then use a cloth or paper towel to blot the stain dry. Start at the outer edges of the stain and work inward. Remove as much of the liquid as possible, and change cloths frequently to prevent a dirty cloth from transferring the stain back onto the carpet.

A Basic Cleaning Solution

When a stain is treated immediately, it’s often enough to just blot the stain dry, add a little water to the stain, and blot dry again. This may require a couple passes, but the focus is on blotting the stain out of the fibers rather than rubbing it deeper into the carpet.

If water is not enough, use a soap-water mixture. Combine ¼ teaspoon clear hand soap with 1 quart of water. Follow up by adding water to the stained area and blotting dry to remove any left over soap.

Choosing a Carpet Stain Removal ProductCarpet Stain Removal Products in Downers Grove

Several carpet stain removal products exist, both as store-bought cleaners and DIY solutions. Test these solutions in an inconspicuous area of the carpet first to see if they cause staining. Also follow the appropriate safety procedures when using and mixing chemicals for stain treatment.

Since carpet is made from several different materials, one carpet may hold up well with a cleaner, while another may be damaged by it. For example, ammonia mixed with water is a common stain treatment option, but when used on wool carpeting it can burn the carpet. Follow the guidelines from your carpet manufacturer when choosing a stain removal product.
